Our paper is instituting what amounts to be a pay cut for single copy carriers. They are incrementally turning them into delivery agents as opposed to wholesale/retailers. THEY are figuring how much a carrier makes (like they have a clue) and cutting them 20 percent from what word is going around.
The catch...they still have to do all the work done now...delivering, paperwork, cutting mastheads to verify returns, and instead of collecting money from stores they have to get signatures on bills they shouldn't have to do. The first two make sense but the rest? For less money? On top of that the racks are being taken away from them and given to the home delivery carrier in the area. I presume to shore up their income and retain them.
Talk about unfair and downright wrong. All SC carriers have done is lose money since the latest incarnation of SC management took over a couple of years ago. Most of us are stuck in this job, love it or not, and will have to endure this latest bending over, but ti just sin't right.
I'd like to hear from other papers as to how single copy is handled. Is this the norm or way off base?
