Re: Gannett Stock
Paging me? Hi. As I wrote elsewhere, I got out of GCI 3 weeks ago, locking in my gains and now am waiting for a dip below $10 before buying again. Maybe below $8. We'll have to see how the market does until the end of the year. Early 2010 might be the time, as I expect some good revenue numbers out of the Broadcast group in the 4th quarter.

Re: Gannett Stock
Good you got out but my point was all the abuse Gannett inflicted on the last round of people laid off only pushed the stock higher for a few weeks.
The possible good revenues from the broadcast group in the 4th quarter will never be enough to make up for the losses of the newspaper group which is Gannett's core business. Wait until the pending disasterous holiday season unfolds for Gannett. For example The Journal News is sinking fast, they still have not recovered from the last round of layoffs in August- to few reporters and to few and inexperienced ad reps going into what used to be the busiest season of the year.
Mike F. you are a good guy. Take action you are being misled by your deparment leaders, HF, SG, JH, LB. Don't let TJN go down on your watch.

Re: Gannett Stock
I got out for the moment in the upper $13 range as well. I don't like the smell of the market right now, and I think that has less to do with Gannett than the overall market. Tho clearly there were (and maybe still are) people who've been riding this stock since the $4-6 range who are/were going to be looking for the door to lock in their profits at the first sign of a significant correction (which we've now had).
I wouldn't look to Broadcast for a major upside surprise in 4Q. Sequentially it will be better, but the year-over-year it is going to suffer because of all the political advertising of October 2008 that is not in 2009. 1Q is the first time year-over-year will start looking significantly better for Broadcast, I think.
Forward earnings are in the $1.60/year range, which means even at a very reasonable price/earnings ratio of, say, 12 (14 is the historical average across the entire stock market over the last 20 years, so 12 is not "rosy scenario" thinking), that Gannett could easily have a price target of $20/share next spring *without* significant increases in revenue (which may happen as well). Gannett just needs to prove over the next couple quarters what the last two quarters are suggesting --that they've stabilized revenues. Further revenue growth from here is gravy on that analysis, not required.
When this market starts to feel a little more stable to me, I'll likely be buying back into Gannett stock again.

Buying gannett stock is a big mistake at any time. Poor leadership in an industry with no hope.
The end is near SELL SELL SELL

Re: Gannett Stock
The trend downward continues. The stock is now under $10. Gannett stock has lost almost 20% in the last two days. Layoffs and breaking the back of the employees for corporate gain and stock hits only works for so long.
Bankruptcy- The end is near.

NOW is the time for all the laid-off people and those who opted out to band together and buy the paper. When the market drops, that's the time to buy.

Re: Gannett Stock
You are right. It is usually the time to buy when the stock is down but not newspapers. Sell- get out and stay out. There is no upside to a newspaper stock.
However it may not be a bad idea to get a group together and buy TJN and make it a private company owned by the employees. That way the paper could return to its successful roots of journalism and local news- serving the community- a paper that people could be proud of not the rag it currently is.
ANy ideas ????

Re: Gannett Stock
Sure- with the shape the paper is in we should be able to get it cheap.
First order of business in editorial get rid of - HF, CR, LN, LB and BF. in advertising get rid of JH, SG, BG and of course MF would have to go. There would be some others in various departments that would also have to go.
We would have to try and get back some of the talented editorial and advertising staff that was let go.
Then the paper could return to its former success
Ideas on how to proceed ???

Re: Gannett Stock
tcdude, Im holding off even though GCI dipped below $10 today. The market as a whole should drift lower now than most the 3rd quarter earnings reports are out. GCI could pop on an announcement of more layoffs, as rumors are floating of such action. LEE reports in early November, so keep your eyes on that stock, it's back below $4 but has a high debt load. If LEE can get major concessions from the guild at the St. Louis Post Dispatch, LEE could jolt upward. Good hunting.

Re: Gannett Stock
If it is true and there will be more layoffs in November that only means that Gannett will go for another spike in the market on the backs of the employees.
When will this stop

Betcha many former employees who were either let go or who opted out are right here on this board.

Re: Gannett Stock
The cheerleaders-for-bankruptcy will be wrong again --this stock will be higher in April than it is today. But don't buck the general market right here.
I'll be curious to see if we get some reports showing there's a new player or someone added significantly to their position in 3Q. Some of that may certainly have been fund managers prettying up their reports near the end of the quarter and end of the hedge fund year, but it certainly looked to me like somebody had a long-term buying program in place for a lot of the quarter. There was a definite trend of morning increases and then some drift in the afternoon. That often means a long-term buying program.

Re: Gannett Stock
Tclude- dream on. Some investors may jump in to make a quick buck on the upswing in Gannett stock every time more employees are laid off and lives ruined but overall Gannett is a dying company. They will do whatever they can at all costs to put off bankruptcy but it is na invetiable end, partially due to the industry and partly due to Gannett's lack of leadership and foresight. The dye has been cast.
In the end one of three things will happen or possibly a combo:
1. Bankruptcy
2. Acquisition by another company
3. Massive sell off of properties that results in a significantly smaller company
Gannett is going down the path of Knight Ridder the only difference is Gannett is kicking and screaming a little louder as it goes down
GET OUT- GET YOUR RESUME OUT AND FIND A NEW JOB
Especially those at The Journal News one of the worst run papers in the Gannett chain.
This is all sad but true.

Re: Gannett Stock
tcdude, thanks for sharing your thoughts. You obviously do your research. I remain convinced that GCI is undervalued, based on the value of its real estate holdings. GCI can unlock value for its shareholders by continuing to move its operations from prime downtown buildings it owns to rented space in suburban office parks.

Re: Gannett Stock
What controls newspaper revenues is the economy. Not only the economy, but the value for the money. Gannett has gutted its newsrooms, the content sucks, the editing of that content sucks, and that sucky content is given away for free. We're not giving advertisers value for their money.
When Gannett goes to a paid web system (and they will), it will help the print business. It's a lot easier to read a newspaper at lunch at a fast-food restaurant than a computer. It's easier to take a newspaper on a train or a bus or a plane. Or, for that matter, the "reading" room.
Unless the drive for profit, not quality journalism, wins out, newspapers will live on.

Re: Gannett Stock
Guest you are wrong- pay for web or not most papers are on borrowed time due to poor foresight and lousy leadership at Gannett. Technology is also hurting papers big time. Papers provide old news when PDA's, palm pilots, TV, Radio, blackberries and other devices can provide up to the minute news.
Newspapers will probably exist in some form but they will be a novelty. Younger generations just don't use them.
Can't you see everthing is working against Gannett.
The company and stock will continue downward.
It is hard and sad to admit but it is the truth.

That is REALLY sad. A newspaper was not to be used, it was a source of information. Too bad the younger generation needs an electronic gadget to think.
