That is infuriating. I know that at least two of those people, MR and MM, were smart, ambitious workers who developed new skills over time and were open to learning new things. They were probably the two biggest assets on that team, especially when you take into account their personalities and attitudes. I just don't understand the reasoning behind letting them go but keeping people whose skills never left 1990. I guess it is probably because the people who made these decisions hasn't the foggiest idea who was good and who wasn't. Everyone is just a set of numbers, a graph of production where quantity is the only variable. Was DW kept? If so, great, because he knew what he was doing but that just makes it even more of a mystery since he had the least seniority. I heard about MR, MM, CH, ST and TP and their boss, DH.

I heard that the creative artists, none of which was let go, have been asked questions about their web skills. They will probably be thrust into doing something none of them has ever been trained on in order to eliminate people in online.

Man, oh man! You are right on! Yes, thank goodness they saved DW. He's one of the good ones. I was also surprised about the seniority issue. Seems they didn't have any reasoning for their decisions this time. I also agree that MR and MM are amazing talents and hard workers... heck.. all the designers they let go were amazing! Unfortunately the remaining designers that are good will to be worked to death. Two should have been gone years ago. Yup, lost in 1990. They must have some serious "cards" to play. I can't believe they're still working there.

DH deserves better as well. She did her best to stand up for the designers and give them opportunities when she could. At least she still has a job.

I'm wondering why none of the creative artists were let go. They make more than the designers for one thing. They could have saved two designers by getting rid of one artist! Yes, they will end up doing web work. Couldn't they have saved money by teaching some of the designers how to do web work? I know some of them already can do sprints around the artists when it comes to web design! Just doesn't make sense.

I thought DH was let go, glad that she still has a job. She is a person of great integrity and I respect her for sticking up for her people whenever she could, because I know she did.

I wish they would have bothered to find out what skills the graphic designer have/had. I think they are all kind of generally regarded as not being as competent as the creative artists, but I know that is not true. And the creative artists have wildly varying skill sets as well. I think the NP just doesn't want to take the time to train anyone and they think somehow the creative artists can just start doing web work with no training. I have no doubt that many people on both teams could and would be willing to learn if given the chance. And then there are a few who wouldn't and it's beyond reason that they are still there. It's just corporate oversight and laziness. They just hurry up and pick people to lay off to meet their own "quota" and save their butt, nevermind how screwed up this lack of foresight will affect future months.

(The artists don't make as much as two designers, btw. It's actually a minor slide on the pay scale. I wouldn't be surprised if some designers make more, just based on the starting salary when they were hired. Do you know if JT going to be supervising the graphic designers now?)

DW should have been let go! She doesn't know crap about the graphic designers! Or the programs they work with!

From what I've been told, DH was demoted from manager to supervisor with a cut in pay. JG, not JT, is in charge of the designers, who are back to being part of advertising.

I know that the creatives make more than the designers... even those who haven't been there as long as some of the designers. They are (supposedly) paid for having more knowledge and ability. I know some were in the $20+ hr. range. None of the designers are making that much.

To the person who said that DH doesn't know anything about the designers or their programs... I don't know what you're taking about. Everytime I needed help on a program, DH was the first person to give me a correct answer.. and if she didn't know the answer, she would find one. She has done her best to help teach and support the designers. She encouraged them to learn Photoshop and take chances with their ad designs. No one else has ever done that for them in the past. I'm glad she's still there.

I started there in December 2001. Transferred from Springfield Offset in VA. So yeah almost 8 years I was in the Press room. I was a Supervisor for 1.5 years there then stepped down because of the Retard Press room Manager we had then which was Canned back in the December round of layoffs. Hope this shines a light as to who I am. As far as have work now......I switched carers and working on getting my CDL.

You can leave a name if it's your own and you want to, or can send a private message. Nothing wrong with your current conversation, just adding that info.

How do you send a private message?

In the top left corner of this box on the page, next to "User Control Panel," select "0 new messages." From there, compose a message and pick who to send it to. If you have any more questions about that, let me know.

I just realized you're not registered. You have to be registered for that function, otherwise the user control panel doesn't show. You post so often, I didn't notice you do so without your name registered.

Sign up. Don't worry, your identity is completely safe. Create a new e-mail account for it if you want.

I didn't say that they don't make more, just that they don't make twice as much. And for the most part, they do have more knowledge and ability. With two exceptions, I don't think any of the designers know Flash, and a couple of them barely know Photoshop. At least two creatives are way too good to be there and deserve to make a hell of a lot more than they do. But I also recognize that some of the designers are under-appreciated and underestimated. I'm pretty sure I just quoted one of them!

DH is awesome. She might not have all the answers, but she cares. I'd rather have an inspiring manager than a self-important prick who knows everything and cares about no one. But that's just the kind of person the NP loves!
