Ethics Policy
Does anyone know if Gannett has a policy reguarding the ETHICS of a Male boss giving out his home phone number to a FEMALE worker (in his dept) and allowing /instructing her to contact him at ANYTIME ??????

Did he say why he thinks you might call him off hours? You don't say what department you work in.
Is his number available to you through regular channels if you needed to call him for professional reasons? Have you asked any counterparts if he gave them his phone number in a similar fashion?
In every newsroom I've been in, everyone's home numbers are internally published in a directory for everyone's professional use. The home numbers of all newsroom supervisors are published on the APP press cards, in fact. There would be no reason for an individual boss to hand any individual his phone number.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong, and the # has been given out to other's. My point is I think that it just doesn't look appropiate

If it's common practice (he's given it out to others, presumably men as well as women though it's hard to tell because your post lacks specificity), why are you stirring up trouble here? I've told all members of my staff to call me any hour of the day or night if work demands it, and many have when news breaks. Keep your speculation and gossip to yourself — too many good careers are sidetracked or derailed by this sort of B.S.

Frankly, unless you're an EE, you shouldn't ever have to be called at weird hours. You should have editors that you can trust to make hard calls. And you should back them up when they do. In 20+ years of being a slot editor on deadline, I can count on one hand the times I had call somebody about an issue. But there's so much of an "I make the call" and "check-with-me'' attitude at Gannett, it's amazing we get a paper out.

Isn't this contradictory? If news breaks at say 3 a.m., the EE really shouldn't need to be called, but the assigning-level editor for online, certainly, and likely print, too, should be, as well as photographer and videographer.

There are lots of production or IT people who may have to be called in at all hours of the day or night.

Oh we are way past "the passing out the phone number" here. Theres phone calls, after hours, texting, going out with, or meeting up with, dinner, drinks, MORE drinks, and then the bragging about it. And all this includes the Pub, AD with sales (male/female) and not just once but very quiet often. But I guess for the salesperson its considered job security. Marriage is just a word to them

at our paper we maintain a list of staff home and cell phone numbers. I have not heard of someone specifically saying call me any time, though.
