Suggestions for this Blog
Re: Suggestions for this Blog
I have no problem with the your setup, gannattoid, and I think you're right to remain anonymous. Jim became too much of an issue on his blog. Thank you for your efforts.

Please make this site easier to navigate. You don't want it to be hard to use or people won't comment.

I'm definitely open to specific suggestions, Aurelia. I'm still learning and working on new ways for the site to be more user-friendly. I'm not stubborn, I just need to learn more.

Please, I implore you, do not succumb to the calls to replace the message board with blog-style comments. If some people want a spot to mix it up, you can always add a new "anything goes" category to the board.

The multiple thread approach apparently suits many readers. However, it makes it more difficult to ferret out what is going on in this company, which despite its multiple sites is, as Jim exposed, one highly coordinated enterprise. Breaking the posts into narrow categories makes it more difficult to spot trends, to spot seemingly unrelated events that are in fact part of companywide strategies. As a reader, it feels to me like more work.
I agree. Why not have less topics in the forum and divide it regionally?

Re: Suggestions for this Blog
My two cents, Gannettoid.
Too many layers to the forums. Firstly, you should consolidate some of the categories.
Secondly, users should have to click no more than one layer to see the thread title, and two total to view the discussion.
To illustrate, organization should go from Board index > Category > Discussion thread and no deeper than that, otherwise topics will get buried and lost.
Thirdly, draw readers to the content from the front index. Add a blog to your web installation. Display news as an entry. Link that blog item directly back to forum where you've already created a discussion thread for that item. You can also duplicate the blog entry as the first post in the discussion thread. That will directly relate the blog entry to the relevant discussion. It's a little more work on your end, but readers will appreciate that.
I appreciate the effort you've put forth, and I hope my suggestions are helpful and constructive.

Jim made himself an issue with his "look at me" tactics. I don't see Gannettoid (whoever he or she is) going the same route.

I love this format. Postings do not disappear after 2-3 days. If you create an account, you know exactly which postings are new or have been updated.
Just my 2 cents.

Also, start consolidating redundant threads, to keep similar topics together.

An0n,
Thanks for the offer. I've had a few offers and may go that route in the future. For you, the first step is to register.
I've consolidated a few threads, but agree more could be done.
Thanks for the post!

Re: Suggestions for this Blog
make it safer, please. the fact that folks have spammed the site means it is easily accessible - good for us who need it and want to know what's happening with our current/past company - yet who knows who is behind the spam?
is there a way to moderate this?

PLEASE consolidate topics/forums. this is a valuable board yet too many similar threads or similar topics listed in different forums make it a challenge to find new posts - save for clicking "view active topics" at the top of the screen.

Re: Suggestions for this Blog
When I first consolidated topics, someone told me I was being too controlling and just needed to let conversations go. And that was for two threads on the exact same topic.
I agree more topics do need consolidated. Always let me know what you think should be combined.
Also, use the search function on this site. It's pretty good.
Thanks for being an active member, wrtrgal5.

And obviously the answer is yes, but you the board is easier to follow if you're logged in as a register. Either way works though.

what would be helpful is a few main forum topics and then threads relating to that forum. however if the threads are visible from the home page it would save time clicking through various titles. for example, news about Poughkeepsie is listed in many threads, the same for news about New Jersey. that's why I suggested regional topics, and then people would know to look at that region for more specific information.
what do others think about this idea?
thanks again for this blog since I've learned more here than at my office.

More great feedback.
Do you mean have a section called Interstate Group, and put the threads about the papers in that group in that section and so on?

I have been following this thread and am frustrated. It seems very simple to say northeast, southeast, or something like that, and put similar threads into that region. Cut out extraneous threads like "Tips We're Watching" since some of the threads in that forum are in other places.
