Re: Post links and share news
My husband could have taken a buyout at the Courier in December, but didn't even realize it...Now at times we wish he had...Very hard to decide what to do when working in the plant is all you've done your adult life...You're about 10yrs from retirement, but have 4 kids between 10-25...We're very concerned about his pension, as it would be hard for us to save that kind of money again in just 10yrs time...Trying to decide if it were an option, would it be better to leave with your pension intact, but know you won't find a job making as much...Or just continue to stick it out til "whenever".

Hola!
All I can say is: It's about time I started commenting here, eh? I plan on making full and frequent use of Gannettoid's terrific forums from now through July 10, when Gannett Blog shuts down for good. After that, I may -- or may not! -- dip into the forums.
But for sure, I'll always make myself available to Gannettoid's terrific publisher for advice, history, and all that stuff that got left on the cutting room floor.
Man, it's nice to have someone else doing the moderating!

Even if union members approve 12-percent pay reduction, additional layoffs may be coming
The contract proposal was rejected 97-7 yesterday by the Indianapolis Newspaper Guild, so it's back to the bargaining table.

I go to work every day with a mix of apathy and frustration. This frantic wondering every quarter about how many are going to get axed is really, really getting old. I'm not saying employees don't have a right to be worried, because we do. But management's head games don't help anything in the least.

To: U.S. Community Publishing Employees
From: Bob Dickey
I want to talk with you about our restructuring efforts, as we continue to battle these difficult economic conditions and the impact on our advertisers. With your help, our various cost savings initiatives are making a difference.
Nevertheless, we will need to implement job reductions to align our resources with the revenue realities we face. Currently each location is finalizing its plan, taking into consideration the local economy, results so far this year and the prospects going forward.
Each plan is different and designed to address the ongoing local needs. All of them, however, involved extremely difficult decisions. Approximately 1400 employees will be impacted by the job reductions across the division. Your publisher or general manager will communicate the local plans, and we expect the vast majority of the reductions will take place by July 9. In a select few cases, the implementation may take longer. There will not be any furloughs for the rest of the year.
I want to stress that the job reductions are not a reflection on these employees or their work. We truly value their many contributions and thank them for their efforts over the years.
Unfortunately, we must take these steps because the advertising environment remains challenged. There have been some promising signs of a recovery, but the reality is the improvements are not broad-based and the economy continues to be fragile.
Even so, we know the economy will improve. To be ready, we need to continue our transformation and maintain a strong financial position. We must publish our newspapers, produce our Web sites and pay down our debt. By taking all these steps today, we will be stronger tomorrow.
Measured against our peers in the media industry, we are healthy and capable of moving forward. We are in this position because we have proactively responded to the financial conditions with actions such as these.
We continue to see good ideas coming from all of you, and we are becoming more innovative everyday. This combination of forward thinking and good fiscal management will, I believe, ultimately result in a return to success for our company.
So, please keep those thoughts and ideas coming. As always, you can email me or call with your comments.

We're losing 35 in Nashville, plus 25 open positions being eliminated. Anybody else have numbers yet?

Re: Post links and share news
these cuts hurt the advertiser. Do more with less which causes the quality of content and circulation to go down. Do they want to lose circulation for newsprint savings. This would not make sense because wouldn't Preprint revenue decrease along with circulation revenue because it's all based on circulation. Unless Gannett is not telling the truth about their circulation numbers at each site. I think the advertisers should question, as I received four Lowes PP in my Sunday paper at home.

Re: Post links and share news
I love how they never let us enjoy a vacation. With the December layoffs, we were told nearly a month in advance. I realized on my way back from Thanksgiving that "D-day" was around the corner. Now this time, I'll be trying to enjoy the 4th while wondering if I'll have my job in a week. Why can't they just make the announcements and be done with it? Don't make us wonder this long!

An anonymous tipster (Thanks, you will remain anonymous) sent this from from the publisher of the Daily Times in Salisbury, Md., Rick Jensen:
Staff:
This past year has been very difficult as we’ve experienced several rounds of workforce reductions and furloughs because of the decline in the economy.
The job cuts and furloughs have taken a toll on all of us. We’ve suffered financially and suffered emotionally as we’ve said goodbye to valued colleagues and worried about the possible loss of our own jobs.
As Bob Dickey’s memo says, we’re being faced with another difficult round of position reductions in the next few weeks.
We had hoped this would not happen again, but unfortunately economic conditions have not improved.
Gannett has set payroll expense reduction targets for us and all other newspapers in the U.S. Community Publishing division, necessitating further reductions in positions. For the past several weeks, department managers have been trying to determine how to achieve the mandated position reductions with the least negative impact on our employees and our operations.
We have been able to achieve about half of the reductions by eliminating positions that are now vacant. This minimizes the human toll. Unfortunately, we only are able to achieve the rest of the savings though some layoffs in the Group. We have submitted our proposal to Corporate, which is now reviewing our list. The layoffs are expected to occur late next week.
We will work to make the process go as quick as possible for the affected employees. Obviously there will be a lot of questions during this time, and we will follow up with employees as the process goes forward.
Without a doubt, this news is very unsettling, and the job reductions are very painful for all.
If you would like to talk about the situation, please drop by, give me a call or send me an e-mail. I welcome your thoughts.
I appreciate your understanding during this difficult time.
Thanks, Rick

I fear that people hoping for Lansing to be a central production site will be very disappointed.
Sure, Lansing prints Battle Creek now, but I have heard at least one director in Lansing wonder aloud how long Battle Creek will continue to publish. That's just speculation (on that person's part only -- no indication that it's a plan). Still, BC has strong, strong competition from a weekly. It doesn't take much to envision everything that's still being printed in Michigan going to Detroit's new printing facility. It actually makes a lot of sense -- unless you are a print production worker in Lansing or Port Huron.

I was actually on vacation when I got the call from my exec ed informing me I no longer had a job. So I guess I'm now on extended vacation.

Gannettoid wrote:The speculation of July layoffs throughout Gannett have been a hot topic on the Gannett Blog, on our forum and in tips we've received. Some believe publishers have already submitted names for approval and many seem to be hearing 10% as the number again for locations for what needs cut.
