While not being able to confirm anything, I know factually that some "adjustments" for Q4 were being thought of immediately after the July 9 layoffs.

Corporate has confirmed this current round is not yet over, so a new one would not be beginning by then. More layoffs are expected as part of this current round.

Are you hearing Sept. 9 about a specific site?

The plot thickens. So maybe that's why an editor in Harrison asked about vacation and Christmas coverage. How callous.

Your recent news has centered on consolidations on the production side. Just before Labor Day, NNCO announced consolidations of its financial operations. Linda Greiwe issued the notice, below, on 8/31, after the employee meetings were concluded. We just started using NSSC last month. The delays in other consolidations are due to the need to upgrade our versions of both Mactive and Genesys, scheduled for late 2009.
Overall, at least 20 members of the finance staff will be gone within the next year.
This news has devastated the finance staff here, whether they are slated for termination or whether they will keep their jobs.

In meetings earlier today and Friday, we announced to our finance department employees that the company will be consolidating the finance department of NNCO (Newspaper Network of Central Ohio) with that of Enquirer Media, Cincinnati, OH. The changes will primarily affect what we do in the areas of cash accounting, general ledger, financial analysis, advertising billing and circulation billing.

As part of the consolidation, some work currently done at NNCO and Cincinnati will be transferred to Gannett’s National Shared Services Center (NSSC) in Indianapolis and/or the Credit Collections Center (CCC) in Springfield, MO.

NNCO, as a business unit, has been reporting to Margaret Buchanan, President and Publisher of Enquirer Media for more than a year and will continue doing so. This move will consolidate the financial arms of both entities to streamline the work and to gain efficiencies.

As a result of these transfers and consolidations there will be job losses within the NNCO finance department. Those people have already been notified and we will begin to work with them on their transitions. Employees in Cincinnati were also notified of the changes on Friday.

The precise timeline for the consolidation to be completed is difficult to know because it entails lots of coordination between other entities. It is expected to take about a year to complete. Affected employees have been given general time frames for the changes to occur.

I just wanted to make you aware of what’s happening.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to ask me, Leslie Dunlap in Finance, or Linda Miller in HR.
