consolidation/USA TODAY page
Is the new USA TODAY front the opening shot in copy desk consolidation? What have other posters heard about either of these issues?

aren't you behind on the times? Isn't Louisiana already consolidated to one source for the copy desks? Or was that just the pagination? Well, whatever. ALL of it will be consolidated.

I know all of it will be consolidated and that some sites have been. I was wondering how soon that axe was falling for everyone else. As I said, the USA TODAY front seemed like the lumberjack was lining up for the swing.

I don't think the complete consolidation will happen until after they have completed the consolidation of all the ad departments, which is scheduled to be finished early 2011. Then look out. They will try every which way they can to consolidate everything they can. This is just the shot off the bow. Sports guys, look out, only one needed for local. Journalists, same thing. You think you are running on a skeleton staff now. It will be worse than a ghost town. Even a ghost town has more people than a Gannett newspaper office will have when they get through, except for the Crystal Palace and the Board of Director's.

The copy desks at the five Louisiana Gannett papers were eliminated last summer. The consolidated copy desk is located at the News-Star in Monroe. The staff there does all the pagination, proofreading and other copy desk functions for all five of the newspapers. The other LA Gannett sites still have a couple of people who work nights to monitor the copy flow, be available to handle late breaking news, write headlines and correct any glitches.
It has been a hard transition for everybody. The products have gotten better, but the amount of mistakes, misspellings and obvious lack of interest or care in the papers has been obvious. It is improving, however slowly it may be.
I believe some copy desk functions also were consolidated either in Mississippi or Tennessee as well.

You've got that right. Gannett will get rid of all USA Today smaller pion's first like they always do until there is only 1 support person left in each circulation office. Then will go after many circulation managers that make way to much money & half don't even do the work. They're getting paid for a title without lifting a finges. And lookout District Sales Managers your next to. Consolidate, consolidate & consolidate until there's nothing but a twig left. It makes me sick! USA Toda is in major trouble. The paper has shrunk in size, the quality of writing has decreased immensely. It doesn't even look like a newspaper anymore but rather a "pamplet"! How pathetic. Anyone who moved to North Carolina to keep there jobs are fools. The paper is drowning & will never recover. No one buys newspapers anymore it's all digital baby!

Editorial consolidation is to start in 2011. Most, if not all sites will go with a company wide editorial system. Servers will be located at 3 to 5 locations, not at the local site. Once on the new system, page layout will be done at the hubs, not locally. At my location, the page designers and copy editors will have to apply for whatever positions are left.
After that, figure on losing your classified sales staff.
